Causes of joint pain:

In one national survey, about one-third of adults reported having joint pain within the past 30 days. Knee pain was the most common complaint, followed by shoulder and hip pain. But joint pain can affect any part of your body, from your ankles and feet to your shoulders and hands.

There are many different causes of joint pain, from arthritis and injuries to infections and tumors. But the most common cause is osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that results from wear and tear on the joints.

A wide range of conditions can lead to painful joints;  Three of them, you may hear the most about are:

Osteoarthritis: It impacts 27 million Americans, Osteoarthritis (OA), the most common type of arthritis. Osteoarthritis, often referred to as “wear and tear arthritis,” is a condition that results from the use of joints over time, or after an injury. In OA, the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones in joints wears away, eventually causing the bones to rub against each other.

Rheumatoid arthritis: “The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can include tender, warm, stiff, and swollen joints along with fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite. RA is an inflammatory condition where your immune system attacks the tissue that lines your joints.”

Bursitis: Bursitis is a condition that can cause pain and inflammation around your joints. It happens when the small sacs of fluid that help cushion your joints become inflamed. Bursitis is common in the shoulder, elbow, and hip. It can also occur in the knee, heel, and foot. Bursitis often occurs from overuse or repeated movements. This can happen from activities like painting, gardening, or cleaning. It can also happen from injuries or arthritis. Bursitis can be painful, but it is usually not serious.

Treatments for Joint Pain:

“The pain experienced in joints can vary greatly in intensity, from mildly irritating to debilitating. Joint pain may be acute, meaning it goes away after a few weeks, or chronic, meaning it lasts for several weeks or months. You can usually manage joint pain with medication, physical therapy, or alternative treatments, even if it’s just short-term pain and swelling. The goal of your doctor is to first try and diagnose the condition that is causing your joint pain, then reduce the pain and inflammation, and finally preserve joint function.”

Medications :

An over-the-counter or prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, celecoxib, ibuprofen, or naproxen can provide relief for moderate-to-severe joint pain with swelling. However, NSAIDs can have side effects, potentially increasing your risk for gastrointestinal bleeding.

Acetaminophen can be effective for mild pain that isn’t accompanied by swelling. However, you should be careful when taking this medicine, especially if you drink alcohol, as high doses may cause liver damage. Use caution when taking any of these pain medications because of the risks.
